June 2008

I would like to extend my appreciation to all who have supported me via email, by phone and out on the inspection trail with your opinions on the recent policy changes by the Georgetown County Water and Sewer District's assumption of the inspection and installation of backflow valves.

Although I have been able to retain approximately half of my existing customers for inspections, the GCW&S has also now decided to restrict my company from installing new backflow valves for any 'grandfathered' customers within the District.

I have received so many calls from customers and people who have wanted to take advantage of our 4-year agreements and installation pricing. They have all expressed opinions on the legality, the lack of freedom in choice and suppression of the free-enterprise system. Unfortunately I have had to tell them that these monopolistic measures and moving the goalposts by GCW&S have left everyone without any options concerning the installation or inspection process of your backflow valves.

I will continue to inspect the backflow valves of all of my customers annually until our agreements have reached their expiration date.

Thank you again for all your support,

Tom McGaughan

Since 2002, we have been specializing in the installation, inspection and testing of backflow valves within the State of South Carolina.

We install only the Wilkins 950-XLT double-check backflow valves which have been proven to be virtually maintenance free.

Elevated for Protection
image As you can see from the pictures on the right we elevate the backflow valve within the enclosure box.

This is done primarily to keep the device from making direct contact with the ground and to avoid letting the shut-off handles (blue) from rusting out.

Unfortunately this is a common problem among many of the backflow valves that we inspect and were installed by other firms. Many times we will replace them with stainless steel handles.

Enclosure Box image
The box we use is a full depth size, all-green design.

Although they do make a half-size version, it does not leave enough room for the addition of a gravel base.

We also put a 3" inch layer of gravel on the bottom of each enclosure box during installation for better drainage.

You can view some of our installation photos at our Backflow Installation page at Gallery page.
